Synopsis
“Undercover Agent Marina” (Sennyū Sōsakan Marina) by Kyuzo Tanaka is an action-mystery novel about a rookie police officer who infiltrates a maid café under the alias “Marina” and gets swept into a dangerous case alongside a private detective.
Through a connection made at a detective agency he visited during a job fair, the protagonist (Yamashita), a fresh recruit at the Metropolitan Police Department, receives a special assignment. He goes undercover at a maid café as “Marina,” where he meets Alisa, a gothic lolita girl who holds a first-class Maid Certification.
Yamashita travels to Tokyo to attend a joint job fair and decides to drop by the office of Kudo, a private detective recommended to him by his Aikido club advisor. However, Kudo bluntly sends him away. The following year, Yamashita joins the Metropolitan Police Department. While still in training, he is unexpectedly given a special mission by his superior, Kidera, to conduct a joint investigation with Kudo. Yamashita goes undercover at a maid café under the name Marina, where he meets Alisa, a gothic lolita girl with a first-class Maid Certification. Before long, Marina and Alisa find themselves dragged into a dangerous mission.
Plot Development
The core appeal of the story lies in its “buddy dynamic.” Marina and Alisa start out as an mismatched, awkward duo but gradually grow to face off against a massive conspiracy and high-stakes missions together.
